The Foote Sanctuary

The Foote Sanctuary covers an area of 9 hectares (23 acres) on Buderim's eastern slopes.

The land was given to the public by the Foote family in memory of their son Eric, killed in the First World War.

There are a few entrances, the main entry for vehicles is via Foote Avenue off the Buderim-Mooloolaba Road.

Entry is free but no dogs are permitted in the natural sanctuary.

Part of the Sanctuary had been used for agriculture, including coffee and citrus farming.

In 1963 a voluntary committee acting for the Maroochy Shire Council took on the task of developing the land into a flora and fauna reserve.

The Sanctuary is now a beautiful wooded area, including stands of rainforest, partly wet sclerophylic (mainly eucalyptus) and treeferns, melaleucas and eugenias.

There are multiple walking tracks, barbeque facilities and toilets.

Many of the plants are labeled for the enthusiasts of botany.

The increasing forest growth has encouraged fauna, especially birds to make the Foote Sanctuary their home.

At last count there are over 82 recorded species of birds, both resident and migratory.

The benefits of the sanctuary are the result of tireless efforts of a volunteer group, part of the BWMCA organisation which nurtures and protects Buderim's great community spirit.
