If you are not totally satisfied with your beefy pie, you will get your money back and a replacement pie. Now that's confidence.
A Pie with Meat 30 July 2007
By Peter Gardiner
Just about every bakery in Australia will claim its meat pies are “famous” or among the best in Australia, but few can back it up like Sunshine Coast baker Mark Hobbs can.
He produces the iconic Beefy’s chunky steak pie which has just been named one of the top 10 pies in Australia.
In Sydney this Wednesday his creations will be trying for the title of Australia’s best.
The baker entrusted to keeping alive the four decades old family secret of making the classic meat pie, says the way the filling holds together is an important ingredient in the quest for perfection.
“I don’t know if we make the perfect pie, but we must be getting close,” Mark said.
One of Beefy’s big edges involves what many of its rivals leave out ~ loads of quality fresh meat.
“It is called a meat pie after all, so that’s why our pies have 77% more meat than your average meat pie.”
Which should go over real well with the likes of That’s Life magazine Best Aussie Meat Pie Contest judges - radio jock Jono Coleman and rugby league meathead Mark “Spud” Carroll.
Mark will send 15 pies to Sydney for the final bake-off, including the chunky steak and his other big guns – honey soy chicken and curry beef.
His dad, Ron, passed on his passion and meticulous planning for pie-making and Beefy’s pies have already won around 30 major medals – many of those under their old name of Sunrise Bakery.
“The most important thing is that we don’t take any shortcuts,” Mark said.
“The Aussie pie is an icon and we get a lot of overseas visitors here that have never tried them before, so we take introducing them to our pies seriously.”
“We are now more in the line of gourmet pies.”
As well as adding the best meats, the trick to exciting taste buds from all over the globe is using special seasonings as well as a secret cooking method.
“We take a lot of care with our pastry to ensure it is the traditional puff pastry – a lot of people comment on how tasty it is.”And it is usually love at first bite with instant interstate Beefy lovers desperately asking if they can buy them somewhere back home
